The writer means to imply the speaker in the text is a highly humble individual by offering shelter to those who to ask for it.

Considering the speaker's house, dooryard, and barn were all crowded already with shelter-seekers, it is worth noting on their selflessness for inviting yet another crowd in one of their remaining empty spots - clearly the speaker doesn't mind sharing their place with strangers.
