Religious figures in New England who had differing beliefs went throughout the area to create these colleges to further their beliefs. With this happening, this allowed them to spread their ideas to people who either wanted to convert or people that simply found an interest in the beliefs.
The Soviet Union helped defeat Hitler and the war effort would probably have been a failure without them, so they were allowed to have Eastern Europe under its control. The Westerners did not meddle in their affairs with Eastern European satellite states, but they did meddle with South East Asian states that were not part of the deal.
