During the tenth century, the Czech people had their capital, Prague, populated with settlements of Slavic tribes. Soon these tribes acquired control of the passage through the river Moldava (Vitava). From the following century, the settlements had already acquired a city aspect due to the strategic position and the development was fast.  The surroundings of the current Staré Mesto (Old Town), started to receive new settlements like Malá Strana (Small Town) and Josefov (Jewish Quarter).
