Gypsy moth populations soar every few years in the Northeastern deciduous forests causing great damage to the trees their larvae

eat. In order to determine the population of gypsy moths in a forest, 200 were trapped, marked, and released. The next night, more moths were collected. Of the 150 that were collected, 20 were already marked. What is the size of the population of gypsy moths in the forest? *

Answer:

<em>The approximate size of the Gypsy moth population is 1500 individuals</em>.

Explanation:

There are different methods to study population density. There are direct methods and indirect methods. Among these last ones, we might find the "<em>Mark-Recapture technique</em>".

The Mark-Recapture technique assumes that the population is closed,  during the sampling season there is no mortality nor natality, marks in the individual last the whole sampling season, and these do not affect the marked individual or their behavior. These marked individuals are randomly distributed in the population, and all the individuals have the same probability of being sampled.

The method consists of capturing a sample of individuals belonging to the population under study, in this case, The Gypsy moth population. After capturing the individuals, the researcher marks them and release them again. The third step is to sample again, capture a new amount of individuals, and count how many of them are marked. These marked individuals belong to the first sample. Calculate the population size by using the Lincoln Index or any other index.

The Lincolns Index estates that to obtain the population size, the research must follow the following procedure:

1) Take an initial sample with n1 number of individuals

2) Mark all the sampled individuals and release them

3) Take a second sample with n2 number of individuals

4) Count the number of marked individuals m

To estimate the total number of individuals in this population, N, the following equation must be considered:

N = (n1 x n2)/m

In the exposed example, this is:

  • n1= 200 individuals in the first sample
  • n2= 150 individuals in the second sample
  • m= 20 individuals in the second sample that were previously marked

              as they were part of the first sample

N = (n1 x n2)/m = (200 x 150) / 20 = 1500 individuals

<em>The approximate size of the Gypsy moth population is </em><em>1500 individuals</em>

Veseljchak [2.6K]

A sacromere is a segment between two adjacent Z discs and are essential for the striated structure of the cardiac and skeletal muscles.

<u>Explanation:</u>

The Z disc is surrounded by the I band made of thin filament called actin. The I band is followed by the A band made up of thick filament called myosin. When the muscles contract the actin and the myosin become superimposed/overlapped.

The sliding filament model explains the contraction of the sacromere in which the Z discs move closer due to the overlapping of the thin and thick filaments. Thus the I band moves close to the A band which remain the same length as shown in figure.

Does the size of the particles change as a substance changes state
Kazeer [188]
Ok, particle is not a very nice word, no real sense of size associated with it
it can be a group of molecules like a speck of sand
referring to the molecules themselves
or refering to the atoms that make up the molecule

now in terms of phase change,
if we consider a speck- a group of molecules- then solids will expand when heated, however this definition falls flat in terms of phase change

ok, how about molecules, as molecules undergo phase change, the molecules in relation to each other will move apart from one another. Solid- molecules are bonded, Liquids- molecules are close and flow around each other, Gas- molecules are a significant distance from one another. But the increase in size when you heat up a molecule, i would have to say yes. adding heat increases energy which increases molecular vibration which would probably  increase the overall average size to some unnoticeable degree.

now standalone atoms are just atoms, if you want to consider the electron cloud as size, then heating it up would negligibly cause the outer move outward. but it really depends on the scale of the question
