Why did the United States fail to reach a compromise on slavery? Was there a solution other than war?
Assoli18 [71]
The US had many attempts at compromise with varying levels of sucess before the Civil War. However, when Lincoln was elected president (on the platform of stopping the expansion of slavery), the South lost hope and seceded.
There is always a solution other than war, however, in this case, war had been a looming possibility for quite some time, and compromise probably would've only pushed the war back a year or two.
Hope this helps :)

Gennadij [26K]

The farm practices change in Texas after the Civil War as "the small family farm became a thing of the past".

Option: C

Explanation:

Following the civil war, a southern farm tenancy emerged, a system of near-slavery with no legal penalties of tenant farmers instead of slaves. Small farmers, the economy grew and became a money-based system, gradually became tenant farmers. The amount of farms in Texas grew from around 61,000 in 1870 to around 174,000 in 1880 and 350,000 by 1900, where farms and ranching undertakings were growing quickly. With the passage of time, Texas agriculture's predominantly pastoral character became more strongly a plow and commercial system. Between 1836 and the Civil War the plantation system, small family farming, and the cattle range industry developed rapidly.
