Can Computers Create Art? Part 1

This is the first part of a series of posts on the topic of whether computers can create art, adapted from my longer essay on that topic. For lessons from the past about AI and art, perhaps no invention is more significant than photography. This first essay addresses the question: How did photography become respected as an art form, and what lessons does this hold for new artistic AI technologies?

Prior to the invention of photography, realistic images of the world could only be produced by skilled artists. In today’s world, we are so swamped with images that it is hard to imagine just how special and unique it must have felt to see a well-executed realistic painting. And the skills of professional artists had steadily improved over the centuries; by the 19th-century, artists such as the Pre-Rafaelites and the French Neoclassicists have achieved dazzling visual realism in their work.

The technical skills of realism were inseparable from the other creative challenges in making images. This changed when photography automated the task of producing images of the real world.

Answer:

Nicéphore Niépce is the father of photography.  In around 1816. Niépce became interested in the new technique of lithography and began to explore ways of using light sensitive materials to produce images directly on to the printing plate or stone. The first successful photo was taken in 1826. Niépce used his heliography process to capture the first photograph but was soon overshadowed by the invention of daguerreotype. The place of the shot was taken in Niépce's estate in Burgundy.

Hope this helps!

Edgar Allan Poe’s short story "The Cask of Amontillado" uses the literary devices of foreshadowing, symbolism, and irony to buil
solniwko [45]

Answer:

Foreshadowing. It gives a sense of prediction for what will happen in the future. Foreshadowing tells/ warns the readers for what might happen in the coming scenes.

This literary device provides the suspense to the plot, making the readers hooked to the story and clinging on to every single detail. The readers look forward to the plot to end, consumed with curiosity as to how the story will be completed. This foreshadowing piques the interest of the readers, keeping the flow of the plot unending and pushing it forward for the climax.

Explanation:

Edgar Allen Poe's short story "The Cask of Amontillado" tells the story of how a man took revenge on his friend for all the insults and silent sufferings he had endured from that man. Fortunato was killed by his 'friend' Montresor for being rude and for insulting him numerous times.

The author uses a lot of literary devices such as foreshadowing, symbolism, irony etc. The use of foreshadowing is most evident in this text where we as the readers, are privy to what the scenes will unfold. Foreshadowing provides a hint/ reference to something that will happen in the future.

Some instances of this foreshadowing is

1. first and foremost seen in the garb of the man himself. Fortunato had dressed himself as a fool, as a foreshadowing of his role in being made a fool by Montresor when he's fooled to his death.

2. Also, the very word "cask" in the title of the story seems to suggest the casket where the dead were kept to be buried.

3. Another such foreshadowing can be seen in the scene where Montresor readily agreed with Fortunato's claim that a mere cough will not kill him; that he will not die of a cough.

This shows the intended hint for what the future plot will unfold.

All the scenes that foreshadow the impending death of Fortunato made the readers hooked on the suspense, waiting to find out if he will indeed be killed, or when or how he will be killed. It gave a forward stance for the plot, further moving the plot into its intended course, at the same time capturing the interest of the readers.

Who were the Zulu people originally before rising to an empire? Question 1 options: a large tribe in Northern Africa
weqwewe [10]

The correct answer is a relatively small tribe of the Bantu people

The Zulu are people who live in what is now South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and Mozambique. In the past, they maintained forms of survival based on wars. They fought, for example, against the invasion of the British and Boer peoples, even in the 20th century. Nowadays, political power within the tribe works in a restricted way.

The Zulus, formerly, were a clan founded by Zulu kaNtombhela. Thus, when Chaka, in 1816, became head of the tripo, the orders were for the power to expand to other tribes and clans. Thus, the Zulu Empire was formed.

However, the tribe did not have an army, let alone weapons and war power. Thus, as leader of the clan, Chaka organized ways to train and arm the warriors of the tribe. Among the armaments made for the fighting were large shields produced from layers of cow hair. After training that included stepping on thorns, the warriors were ready for the clashes.

Thus, the Zulus became quick and silent in their attacks, taking enemies by surprise. However, the strength acquired by the tribe was not sufficient to face the Dutch and English. Thus, in 1887, the Zulu people were dominated by the British who invaded Zululand.
