If you are talking about miners, who lived on site, they often lived in the caves, and or above ground in minimalist settings; a bed, sheet, and pillow. They often got sick and had health issues when sleeping in the tunnels/caves. The conditions were harsh, and at times, if they lived close enough they lived at their own house, and just proceeded to go to work on time.
