The people shown in the attached image were hopeful about their future because there were many jobs and business opportunities in America.

There was this popular statement, that America is a place where everyone and anyone can make it. This is part of the reasons why many people chose America as their point of emigration.

Again, if we look at the image, we can see the caption as written, "Welcome to the Land of Freedom". Which gives the notion that every man is free to choose their own destinies. This is enough to put a smile on the faces of these people, knowing fully well that they can actualize their dreams of coming to America.
