The great fire of Chicago originated the night of October 8, 1871. Three days later, the fire could be contained. The fire burned about 17,500 buildings and about 300 people lost their lives.

After the fire, Joseph Medill was elected as mayor of Chicago as a candidate for the "Fireproof" party. In order to anticipate the appearance of new fires, the city quickly changed the building codes.

The city was rebuilt by applying these new standards, which contemplated the use of fireproof materials. The city government also reformed the fire department, developing one of the largest fire fighting forces in the U.S.
