It’s wrong.

The surface area means the area of the outside of the cube.

The area of a square is just width x height. And we are told one of the sides is 5.

A square has all equal sides. So what’s 5x5? then times that by the number of squares

a=-  \frac{ x^{2}-  \sqrt{( x^{3} + x^{2} b+12x-72(x-2)-2x} }{x-2} ,-  \frac{ x^{2}+  \sqrt{( x^{3} + x^{2} b+12x-72(x-2)-2x} }{x-2}

Solve for b by simplifying both sides of the equation then isolating the variabel.

b= \frac{12}{x}+ \frac{72}{ x^{2} }-2+2a- \frac{4a}{x}+ \frac{ a^{2} }{x}- \frac{2a^{z} }{ x^{2} }

is:

x=\frac{-b\pm\sqrt[]{b^2-4ac}}{2a}

In this case we notice that a=1, b=-4 and c=3. Plugging this values in the general formula we get:

\begin{gathered} x=\frac{-(-4)\pm\sqrt[]{(-4)^2-4(1)(3)}}{2(1)} \\ =\frac{4\pm\sqrt[]{16-12}}{2} \\ =\frac{4\pm\sqrt[]{4}}{2} \\ =\frac{4\pm2}{2} \end{gathered}

then:

x_1=\frac{4+2}{2}=\frac{6}{2}=3

and

x_2=\frac{4-2}{2}=\frac{2}{2}=1

Therefore, x=3 or x=1.
