A. wartime labor shortages.  The outbreak of World War II led to many Americans enlisting to fight overseas.  As a result, there was a shortage of labor.  Women and minorities including Mexican Americans were employed at factories to supply the army for the war effort. Some Mexican Americans enlisted and fought in the U.S. army.
