Pendulums are common devices that scientists use to demonstrate concepts of motion, but they aren’t limited to the confines of a science classroom. In fact, pendulums are all around us. They are used to keep time (clocks) or to have fun on a playground (swings). Some pendulums, such as the one in the photograph, are used to demonstrate the Earth’s rotatation. In this lab activity, you will create a pendulum and manipulate its components to test factors that control the motion of its swing.
