This is because the macho culture prevailing in the Elizabethan period placed the woman in a position of submission to her husband. This is even felt for the most powerful woman, the queen. If we look at the present day, we will see that we have evolved, but there are still strong macho traits in society. Women still earn less than men, even though they perform the same functions. In addition, most women have double work, that is, work outside and at home with household chores.
