For this activity, you will write a letter to Congress addressing your views and concerns about the decision of the Dred Scott c
ase based on factual evidence. You will have to identify what rights/laws it violated, create a law to prevent it from happening again/identify a law that prevents it from happening again, and determine/issue a settlement for the family of Dred Scott.
The decision of the court was read in March of 1857. Chief Justice Roger B. Taney -- a staunch supporter of slavery -- wrote the "majority opinion" for the court. It stated that because Scott was black, he was not a citizen and therefore had no right to sue.
