to turn a mixed number to an improper fraction...
take ur whole number (6) and multiply it by ur denominator (4)....6 * 4 = 24...now add that to ur numerator (3).....24 + 3 = 27...now put that over ur original denominator (4).......27/4 <== ur improper fraction

basically, ur just doing this : (6 * 4 + 3) / 4 = (24 + 3) / 4 = 27/4
