Read the excerpt from the play Trifles, by Susan Glaspell. COUNTY ATTORNEY (with the gallantry of a young politician). And yet,

for all their worries, what would we do without the ladies? (The women do not unbend. He goes to the sink, takes a dipperful of water from the pail and, pouring it into a basin, washes his hands. Starts to wipe them on the roller-towel, turns it for a cleaner place. ) Dirty towels! (Kicks his foot against the pans under the sink. ) Not much of a housekeeper, would you say, ladies? The excerpt contributes most to which feminist theme? Women artists face difficult paths when pursuing careers. Women need to feel they are determining their own fate. Women are often expected to conform to roles set by society. Women often suffer great abuses in male-dominated societies.

After reading the excerpt from the play "Trifles", we can say that it contributes most to the following feminist theme:

C. Women are often expected to conform to roles set by society.

Themes in "Trifles":

 • Although most of the options presented in the question do have themes developed in the play, we must choose the one that better fits the excerpt we are analyzing here.
 • In the excerpt, the country attorney is criticizing Mrs. Wright for being a bad housekeeper. He expects a woman to take care of her home impeccably. Dirty towels are simply unacceptable.
 • The country attorney does not take into consideration that the woman may not have wanted this life for herself. That maybe she had other dreams and wishes. Or simply, that her life may have been so miserable that she did not feel like doing chores.
 • All that matters to him is that she does the duties that are expected from her. If she does not, it means she is worthless.

With the information above in mind, we can choose letter C as the best option for this particular excerpt.

How do authors present and develop characters? Check all that apply.
Zina [86]

Answer:

The way characters are described

The situations in which the characters interact

Dialogue between characters

Conflicts within and between characters

Explanation:

Characters are first developed by how they are described. They are not going to throw a character with no description into a book. They will say, a skinny, lanky kid named George was frighted by the dark. This character is fearful of the dark and he may not be that strong for a skinny, lanky kid. Situations where they interact are important because of how they react and respond to another person. For example, Samantha liked Steven so she acted shyly, but confident around him. When she interacts with Steven, it shows that she is not scared or choked up, but confident and shy with him. Dialogue is important because of what they say and how they say it. For example, I asked Duke a question and he snarled at me, "figure it out yourself." This shows that Duke is not the best to talk to at the moment, so he must be easily agitated. Conflicts are important because it shows how they were before, during, and how they became after. It shows the before and after of their character, for example, George was afraid of the dark, but then as he got a flashlight, he was able to use it if he thought something was there. After using it numerous times, he realized nothing was there and he did not need it anymore. You him when he was scared, helped with, and then not scared.
