Water is used in many reactions in the body, both enzymatic and chemical. Water within blood and lymphatic system is responsible for the transport of hormones, antidotes oxygen and nutrients.
Metabolism can be described as entirety of chemical reactions which take place within a cell, the result of which is energy for processes which take place in the body.
Organisms that live in water are not totally independent of soil as a resource. These organisms depend on aquatic plants for food and other substances. These aquatic plants in turn require minerals for their sustenance. These minerals are carried to waterbodies from soil by rivers, rainwater etc.
For evolution to occur:
There must be genetic variation in a population. This provides variation on which natural selection can act. Then natural selection can act by selecting those species which are better adapted to the environmental conditions. Over time those animals that are best suited to the environment only will survive and reproduce. Those organisms successful genes will be preserved and eventually the gene frequency in the population will change, changing the overall characteristics of a population. This is how evolution occurs.
