Glial cells are cells in the nervous system that are not capable of transmitting information from the brain (as neurons do) but perform a variety of functions.
There are many types of glial cells. Some are: (1) Astrocytes - these regulate the chemical environment for the neuron as well as providing nutrients to the neurons by acting as a passage for the nutrients to be delivered from the blood brain barrier to the neuron. (2) Oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells - form the myelin sheath of the neurons in the CNS and PNS respectively. (3) Microglia - contribute to the immune response in the nervous system
