L = Lea's eggs
C = Chris's eggs 

Chris had twice as many eggs as Lea 
C = 2L 

Chris dropped 6 of his eggs and Lea dropped 2 of hers, and then they had the same number. 
C - 6 = L - 2 

two equations, two unknowns, can be solved 

sub C = 2L 
into 
C - 6 = L - 2 
2L - 6 = L - 2 
L = 4 
so C = 8 

verify 
C = 2L; twice 4 is 8, OK 
C - 6 = L - 2 
8 - 6 is 2 and 4 - 2 is 2, OK 

So Lea started with 4 eggs, Chris with 8
