People often use manipulation to get what they want.

When the woman attempted to convince the man to go to the store and by the paint, he felt that she was attempting to manipulate him into doing so. 

Manipulation usually requires an ability to get others to do what you want them to do without them knowing it. 

Manipulation techniques can be very effective in getting others to do things you want them to do.
