What was done to overcome the problem of the MSL landing?
ladessa [460]

The spacecraft descended on a parachute, then during the final seconds before landing, the final landing system was a tether and rope!

 • 2. A parachute was used

What is MSL?

The rover is part of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission which tested a novel landing method that saw the spacecraft descend on a parachute before its landing system fired up its rockets and hovered as the rover was lowered down onto the surface. A similar entry and landing process was repeated in Feb. 2021 when the Perseverance rover arrived on Mars.

To solve the problem, engineers designed the kit to cut the parachute and use rockets for the final part of the landing sequence. About 60 feet (18 m) above the surface, the MSL's "sky crane" was deployed. The landing assembly hung the rover below the rockets using a 6 m rope.

With this information, we can conclude that A parachute was used to overcome the problem of the MSL landing
