The anomie theory, also known as the Strain theory was proposed by Robert K. Merton.

A state of anomie is developed when access to these goals is blocked.

Merton developed five modes of adaptation to cultural strain.

Ritualism is the rejection of goals but acceptance of means.
Retreatism is the rejection of both goals and means.
