The amount of money Mr Liam's wife received is $2140

<h3>How much did Mr Lim's wife receive?</h3>

The total money received by the three people can be represented with this equation : x + y + z = $3600

Where:

  • x = amount Mr Lim's wife received = $500 + 2z
  • y = amount the son received = 2z
  • z  = amount the daughter received

The above equation can be rewritten as

$500 + 2z + 2z + z = $3600

In order to determine the value of z, take the following steps:

Combine similar terms

2z + 2z + z = $3600 + $500

Add similar terms

5z = $4100

Divide both sides by 5

z = $820

Mrs Liam's wife received : ($820 x 2) + $500 = $2140

Mr Lim's wife received the sum of $3600

<h3>Calculation of total sum received.</h3>

The total amount given out by Mr Lim = $3600

The total amount received by his wife = 500 + X

(where X is the amount received by the son)

But X is = 2d

where d is the amount received by the daughter.

therefore to calculate for x and d to find the amount received by Mr Lim's wife.

3600= 500+X

X = 3600 - 500

X = 3100

But X = 2d

substitute for x

3100 = 2d

d =3100/2

d= 1550

Therefore the amount received by Mr Lim's wife is =

500 +. 3100

= $3600
