Equality is considered to be the core of democracy because in order for the people to have some sort of power to rule, they can't be against one another. Racial equality is an important factor because if people are going judge others on their color, how will they be able to have power without abusing it? If the people are in charge, they could possibly make people deal with the past pains that are now prohibited, such as being slaves, indentured servants, and other "jobs". In order to have a proper democracy, equality must be well up-kept, otherwise it could collapse on its' own self.
