Jackie received a $75 gift card for her birthday. She bought 3 pairs of jeans that cost $16.00 each with the gift card. She will
use the rest of the money to buy socks that cost $4.25 a pair. What is the maximum number of pairs of socks that Jackie can buy? 2) Solve the inequality 4.25s + 3(16) < 75 to determine the solution to the word problem.
3) Explain the meaning of your solution to question 2 in the context of the word problem.
3) "Jackie received a $75 gift card for her birthday. She bought 3 pairs of jeans that cost $16.00 each with the gift card." When I read that the only thing my brain thinks to do is multiply 16 x 3. I got 48 when I did that. Now, we have to subtract 75 by 48. I got 27. Then it says, "She will use the rest of the money to buy socks that cost $4.25 a pair. What is the maximum number of socks Jackie can buy?" I multiplied about 3 different numbers until I found 6. When I multiplied that I got 25.50. When I subtracted 25.50 and 27, I got 1.50. Enough to get a candy bar.
