You don't have time to worry about self-expression when you're struggling to meet fundamental demands, Once you don't have to anymore people feel more comfortable with trying to find themselves and embracing their own individuality

researchers have come to the conclusion that socioeconomic growth fueled the rise in individualism is supported by the fact that the countries that did not demonstrate an increase in individualist ideals were among the lowest in socioeconomic development over the time period studied.
