An experienced dental assistant is instructed by the orthodontist to train the new assistant, he must teach the novice that Malocclusion is the abnormal alignment of the teeth and the way in which the upper and lower teeth fit together.

Causes of malocclusion

There are many serious causes of misaligned teeth:

 • Size mismatch between jaw and teeth
 • Habit of thumb sucking and/or atypical swallowing
 • tooth loss
 • Certain birth defects of the jaw

The most common cause of teeth misalignment is when the jaw is too small for the size of the teeth. A small discrepancy in size causes the teeth to be too close together, thus causing misalignment.

With this information, we can conclude that the aspects of the patient and the patient's medical record relate to the treatment and consultation procedures for malocclusion.
