Al-Fatihah is the first surah of the Qur'an, that is, the first chapter of the holy book for muslims. It consists of 7 verses.
The direct meaning of Al-Fatihah is the "Opening", which gives an indication of the function of the sura as "the opening of the book", an introduction to the teachings of the Qur'an. It is recited in each cycle of the obligatory time prayers and in a wide range of opening functions in the daily Islamic way of life. It can also be interpreted as a reference to the sura having the ability to open one's heart to faith in God.
