you can just split the figure in 2 separate figures and them add the areas:

area rec. 1:

3m×3m= 9m²

area rec. 2:

3m× (2m+3m)

= 3m×5m

=15m²

total area:

9m²+15m²= 24m²

abbie spent 5/8 of her money and saved the rest. if she spent 45,how much money did she have at first?
algol13

$72

<h3>Further explanation</h3>

<u>Given:</u>

Abbie spent ⁵/₈ of her money and saved the rest.

She spent $45.

<u>Question:</u>

How much money did she have at first?

<u>The Process:</u>

The meaning of "Abbie spent ⁵/₈ of her money" is that she has spent 5 of the 8 parts of the money she had at first.

Let us make a pattern of 8 units for the amount of money that Abbie had at first.

\boxed{\cdot}\boxed{\cdot}\boxed{\cdot}\boxed{\cdot}\boxed{\cdot}\boxed{\cdot}\boxed{\cdot}\boxed{\cdot}

Since Abbie spent ⁵/₈ of her money, then we create a pattern of 5 units containing $9 each. Recall that \boxed{\$ 45 \div 5 = \$ 9}

\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9} = \$ 45

From the pattern above, we can see that \boxed{ \ 1 \ unit = \$ 9 \ }.

Let us calculate how much money Abbie had at first.

\boxed{ \ 1 \ unit = \$ 9 \ }

\boxed{ \ 8 \ unit = \ ? \ }

\boxed{ \ 8 \times \$ 9 = \$ 72 \ }

Thus, the money Abbie had at first is $72.

The complete pattern of Abbie's initial money is as follows:

\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9}\boxed{\$ 9} = \$ 72

- - - - - - - - - -

<u>Quick Steps:</u>

Let M as Abbie's initial money.

\boxed{ \ \frac{5}{8} \times M = \$ 45 \ }

Both sides are multiplied by ⁸/₅ so that M is the subject alone on the left side.

\boxed{ \ M = \frac{8}{5} \times \$ 45 \ }

We crossed out 5 and 45.

\boxed{ \ M = 8 \times \$ 9 \ }

\boxed{ \ M = \$ 72 \ }

Thus, the money Abbie had at first is $72.

Mr. Akika has 30 24-cent and 33-cent stamps all told. The stamps are worth $8.91. How many of each kind of stamp does he have?
riadik2000 [5.3K]

Answer:

  • 24-cent: 11
  • 33-cent: 19

Step-by-step explanation:

I find it easiest to solve these using the variable to represent the number of the most-expensive item. Let x represent the number of 33-cent stamps. Then the total value (in cents) is ...

  33x +24(30 -x) = 891

  9x = 171 . . . . . . . . . . . . . subtract 24(30), collect terms

  x = 19 . . . . . . . . . . . . divide by 9

  30-x = 11 . . . . . . . find the number of 24-cent stamps

Mr. Akika had 11 24-cent stamps and 19 33-cent stamps.

_____

<em>Additional comment</em>

You seem to have several of these to solve. They all have a similar solution.

If we let x represent the number of higher-value items, N, the total number of items, V the total value, and v1 and v2 the individual values (v2 > v1), the equation is ...

  v2(x) +v1(N -x) = V

  x(v2 -v1) = V -v1·N

  x = (V -v1·N)/(v2 -v1) . . . . generic solution

Using this formula in the problem here, we find ...

  x = (891 -24(30))/(33 -24) = 171/9 = 19 . . . as above
