Republican candidate Abraham Lincoln does not want slavery to spread, he has no intention to abolish it where it already exists, but wants new territory to be free states.
Meanwhile Stephen Douglas, democrat party candidate, believes there should be popular sovereignty, each state must vote, and decide if they want to be free or slave.
Neither candidate believes black people are equal to white people. Douglas comments that The United States government was created by white men and for white men, therefore he believes black people should not have rights, and should always be slaves.
