The following situations relate to the demand curve for iPhones [normal good]. For each situation, state whether it is a change

in quantity demanded or a change in demand. For every ‘change in demand’ indicate whether the change is an increase in demand or a decrease in demand as it relates to the quantity demanded/demand for iPhones now. (a) Income statistics show that income of 18–25-year-olds have increased by 10 Percent over the last year. (b) Apple announces that it will introduce a new, improved and cheaper iPhone to go on sale next month (c) Believing that it has significant control of the market for smart phones, Apple decides to raise the price of iPhones with the goal of increasing profits. An increase in the income of 18-25 year olds would lead to an increase in the demand for iPhones.

The announcement made by Apple, would lead to a decrease in the demand for iPhone.

An increase in the price of iPhones would lead to a decrease in the quantity demanded of iPhones.

A decrease in the price of android phones would lead to a decrease in the demand for iPhone.

A demand curve is a curve that shows the relationship between the price of a good and the quantity demanded. A normal demand curve is downward sloping. This means that as prices increases, the quantity demanded would decrease.

Only a change in the price of a good leads to a change in the quantity demanded. This would mean a movement along the demand curve for the good.  Other factors leads to a change in demand. This is shown by either an outward shift or inward shift of the demand curve. When demand increases, there is an outward shift. When demand decreases, there is an inward shift of the demand curve.

An increase in income would lead to an increase in demand for iPhone because iPhone is a normal good. This would lead to an outward shift of the demand curve.

As a result of the announcement, demand would decrease. This is because human beings would like to buy goods cheaper, so they would defer purchase to next month. This would lead to an inward shift of the demand curve.

An increase in the price of iPhones would lead to a decrease in the quantity demanded of iPhones.

If there is a decrease in the price of androids, there would be an increase in the demand for androids and a decrease in the demand for iPhone. This would lead to an inward shift of the demand curve.

Colson Inc. declared a $320,000 cash dividend. It currently has 12,000 shares of 7%, $100 par value cumulative preferred stock o
Alex787 [66]

Answer:

The divided for common stockholders is $152000

Explanation:

The preferred stock is cumulative whch means any arrears in preference dividend will be paid whenever the dividend is declared.

The amount of yearly preference dividends is = 12000 * 100 * 0.07 = 84000

Thus, when 320000 cash dividend is declared, 2 years ( current year and arrear year) preference dividend will be paid first and the remaining will be distributed among common stock holders.

The dividedn for common stockholders is 320000 - (84000 * 2) = $152000

Suppose a tax of $4 per unit is imposed on a good, and the tax causes the equilibrium quantity of the good to decrease from 2,00
Marina CMI [18]

Answer:

option (c) $600

Explanation:

Given:

Tax = $4 per unit

Initial equilibrium quantity = 2,000 units

Final equilibrium quantity = 1,700 units

Decrease in consumer surplus = $3,000

Decrease in consumer surplus = $4,400

Now,

Deadweight Loss is calculated using the formula:

Deadweight loss

= \frac{1}{2} × Tax × (Original equilibrium quantity - New equilibrium quantity)

on substituting the respective values, we get

Deadweight loss = \frac{1}{2} × 4 × (2,000 - 1,700)

or

Deadweight loss =  2 × (3)  = $600

Hence,

the correct answer is option (c) $600

Stock A has an expected return of 17.8 percent, and Stock B has an expected return of 9.6 percent. However, the risk of Stock A
MrRissso [65]

Answer:

13.70%

Explanation:

The expected return of a portfolio is said to be the weighted average of the returns of the individual components,

Given that:

Stock A has an expected return = 17.8%

Stock B has an expected return = 9.6%

the risk of Stock A as measured by its variance is 3 times that of Stock B.

If the two stocks are combined equally in a portfolio;

Then :

The weight of both stocks will be 50% : 50 %

So the  portfolio's expected return can be determined as follows:

Expected return for stock A  = 50% × 17.8%

Expected return = 0.50 × 17.8%

Expected return = 8.9 %

Expected return for stock B = 50 % × 9.6 %

Expected return for stock B = 0.50 × 9.6%

Expected return for stock B = 4.8%

Expected return of the portfolio = summation of the expected return for both stocks

Expected return of the portfolio = 8.9 %  + 4.8%

Expected return of the portfolio =  13.70%
