A loud classroom demonstration involves igniting a hydrogen filled balloon. The hydrogen within the balloon reacts explosively w

ith oxygen in the air to form water. If the balloon is filled with a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen, the explosion is even louder than if the balloon is filled only with hydrogen-the intensity of the explosion depends on the relative amounts of oxygen and hydrogen gas within the balloon. Look at the molecular views representing different amounts of hydrogen and oxygen gas in four different balloons of equal size. Based on the balanced chemical equation (you will have to write one), which balloon will make the loudest explosion

Hey there!

balanced chemical reaction:

2 H₂ (g) + 1 O₂ ( g )  ----------> 2 H₂O ( g )

Reagents :

H = 2 * 2 = 4

O = 1 * 2 =  2

----------------------

total = 4 + 2 => 6

Products:

H = 2 * 2 = 4

O = 2 * 1 = 2

___________

total = 4 + 2 => 6

Hope this helps

After decaying for 48 hours, 1/16 of the original mass of a radioisotope sample remains unchanged. What is the half life of this
nika2105 [10]

The half life of this radioisotope is 12 hours.

<u>Explanation:</u>

The length of time it requires to break down for an initial half amount or the amount of time taken to transform half of a reactant into product. Half of a particular sample took the time to experience radioactive decay. The time it would take to degrade radioactively into another component or nuclide for half of the atoms of an unstable element or nuclide.

If 1/16 of the sample remains it predicts that there were 4 half-life periods then 16 = 2⁴

4 half-life periods = 48 hours / 4

half-life period = 12 hours.

A gaseous system undergoes a change in temperature and volume. What is the entropy change for a particle in this system if the f
deff fn [24]

Explanation:

Entropy means the amount of randomness present within the molecules of the body of a substance.

Relation between entropy and microstate is as follows.

           S = K_{b} \times ln \Omega

where,      S = entropy

             K_{b} = Boltzmann constant

             \Omega = number of microstates

This equation only holds good when the system is neither losing or gaining energy. And, in the given situation we assume that the system is neither gaining or losing energy.

Also, let us assume that \Omega = 1, and \Omega' = 0.833

Therefore, change in entropy will be calculated as follows.

     \Delta S = K_{b} \times ln \Omega' - K_{b} \times ln \Omega

                 = 1.38 \times 10^{-23} \times ln(0.833) - 1.38 \times 10^{-23} \times \times ln(1)

                 = 1.38 \times 10^{-23} \times (-0.182)

                 = -0.251 \times 10^{-23}

or,             = -2.51 \times 10^{-24}

Thus, we can conclude that the entropy change for a particle in the given system is -2.51 \times 10^{-24} J/K particle.
