Utterson has in his hands a closed letter and is debating with himself over whether to open it or not. He feels tempted to do it, but fear he will be breaking his friend's trust by doing so. He thinks not opening it might cost him another friend, since he doesn't know what it contains, but he doesn't trust his own reasoning and then condemns this fear as disloyalty.
