Half of the amount of the radioisotope present at any given time will undergo  spontaneous disintegration during the succeeding 5730 years. In other words , after 5730 years ,only half of the original amount of 14 c remains in a sample of organic material . Imagine  that you start out with 100 grams of carbon 14 . The half -life is the time it takes for half  of given amount of isotope to decay .
