What are tissues composed of?

Tissues are cells organized and associated, accomplishing different functions in the organism.

There are four types of tissues: epithelial, muscular, connective, and nervous.

All of them are composed of the same components that might vary according to the tissue and its functions.

 • Cells

Cells are the main component of tissues. Their shape, size, organization, and closeness vary from tissue to tissue.

 • Extracellular matrix

The extracellular matrix is the space between cells. It varies in size, state, and composition depending on the tissue.

It contains proteins, water, salts, and other macromolecules. This composition also varies.

Among their many different functions, we can mention hydration, mechanical pressure resistance, reproduction and cell differentiation, motility, substances diffusion, communication between cells, and damaged tissue repairing, among others.

In addition to cells, the extracellular matrix compose tissues.
