The essay must show that religion was important to art in the Middle Ages because it promoted didactic teaching of religiosity and what was expected of the population.

Structure for writing an essay

 • Introduction: Introduce the subject of the essay. In this case, you will show how the Middle Ages had religion as their main promoter of political and social organization.

 • Body: Write two or more paragraphs. In the first paragraph, you must show how religion dominated society and for this dominance to occur, it was necessary for the population to be taught religious concepts that showed what was right and wrong. In the second paragraph, you should show how the most democratic way of promoting this teaching was through art since the population had little access to formal education and this was not necessary to understand works of art.

 • Conclusion: Conclude your essay by showing how religion was important in the artwork of the Middle Ages to promote the control of society, establish politics and rule, and present the way the population should behave.

You should search for articles that highlight how art was a socioeconomic promoter in the middle ages and that's why religion was so important in these works, as it was an institution followed by the entire population and that determined all social factors.
