These were people who were not indentured servants and were free to work for themselves. Another way was through the use of indentured servitude. This was a system where people would work for a certain period of time, usually four to seven years, in exchange for their passage to America. After they had fulfilled their contract, they were free to work for themselves. The last way was through the use of slavery. This was a system where people were forcibly brought to America and forced to work for their entire lives.
