This has to do with the military strategy that was done by the army of Malcolm in an attempt to hide how many men they had.

Hence, we can see that to fulfill the prophecy given to Macbeth when he was told that he will only be defeated when Birnam Wood marches towards him and when the soldiers hold the branches it will look like the woods are marching, this was done by Malcolm's army.
