Dissociative identity disorder was known as multiple personality disorder until 1994 but was renamed in 1994 to reflect a better understanding of the condition. That is, it is characterized by the fragmentation or division of identities, rather than the proliferation or growth of separate personalities.

(Multiple Personality Disorders) People with dissociative identity disorder (DID), a mental illness, have two or more separate personalities. These identities facilitate human behavior at various times. DIDs can cause memory leaks and other issues.

Disability is most common in children who experience long-term physical, sexual, or psychological abuse, and is rarely found in a frightening or highly unpredictable home environment. The stress of war and natural disasters can also lead to dissociative disorders.
