About 2000-3000 years ago Shamanism began to be replaced by the practices of formally trained religious specialists. The replacement process began with the rise of Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism.

Shamanism denotes a religious practice, an ancient healing tradition, and a way of life. It can be found in cultures around the world from ancient times up to the present day. In Shamanism, a practitioner(shaman) interacts with an assumed spirit world. The means of interaction are the altered states of consciousness, such as trance.

The main motive of the Shaman is to heal and aid human beings through the direction of the spirits or spiritual energies into the physical world. Beliefs and practices associated with it are termed " shamanic". Historically it is often associated with indigenous and tribal communities. It is generally believed that Shamanism originated from hunting-gathering cultures.

Gradually, with the arrival of formal religious practices like Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism, the thriving popularity of Shamanism got hampered. People migrated to these forms of religion and thus Shamanism began to be replaced. However, till now, many areas still bear evidence of the practice of Shamanism.
