The oxygen we breathe gets into the blood through the alveoli and capillaries. The Red blood cells travel through the capillaries. Alveoli's walls share a membrane with the capillaries. Oxygen and carbon dioxide get in and move freely between the human respiratory system and the bloodstream.

Oxygen molecules are attached to red blood cells, which travel back to the heart, and at the same time, carbon dioxide molecules in the alveoli get out of the body.
