In the field of science, an opportunistic pathogen can be described as a pathogen that normally does not harm a host. However, such a pathogen causes an infection when a host become immunocompromised. An immunocompromised host has a low resistance to fight against microorganism and is more vulnerable to an infection.

There are several factors as a result of which opportunistic pathogens harm the body. Taking of immunosuppressants, undergoing chemotherapy, having HIV are some of the cases when the immune system is weak. At this time, an opportunistic pathogen is most likely to attack.
