Magnesium sulfate is being continuously infused intravenously to a patient who has been diagnosed with severe preeclampsia. The need to stop taking the drug would be indicated by the absence of deep tendon reflexes.

A pregnancy complication is preeclampsia. Preeclampsia can cause high blood pressure, proteinuria, which is an indication of damaged kidneys, as well as other organ damage symptoms. Women whose blood pressure had previously been within the normal range typically experience preeclampsia after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

Central nervous system depression is one sign of magnesium poisoning. If this ailment is not treated, the lack of deep tendon reflexes will cause the respiratory system to malfunction. The client should maintain deep tendon reflexes, a respiratory rate of at least 16 breaths per minute, and a urine output of at least 30 mL/hour (or as prescribed by the agency). Positive results include a drop in blood pressure because preeclampsia is associated with hypertension.

zhannawk [14.2K]

Reason as exposure to teratogens during the embryonic period carries the greatest risk for developmental abnormalities:

Teratogens are those substances that causes functional or physical abnormalities when the pregnant women are exposed to it. The are four types of teratogens namely,

 • metabolic conditions
 • physical agents
 • drugs or chemicals
 • infections

Generally, the abnormalities occurs during the third to eighth week of pregnancy i.e the period when the major organs of the fetus develop. They can also lead to the complications like miscarriage, preterm labors or spontaneous abortions.

Some of the types of tranquilizers namely, lithium and phenothiazine are considered to be teratogens. Most of the congenital malformations are of unidentified origin, but the teratogens that are known and evaluated include maternal illnesses and infections, drugs, metal toxicity, or physical factors (for example radiation).
