What was John’s hypothesis in the experiment? The hypothesis should make a prediction of the outcome of your experiment and shou

ld include an explanation of why you expect that outcome. This can be simplified into an if, then, because statement... IF (the independent variable does this), then (the dependent variable will do this), because (I learned this in the lesson)

The hypothesis is a claim that correlates the dependent and independent variables to predict results. Hypothesis: <em>If the organic fertilizer is added to the substrate, then plants will grow taller.</em>

<h3>What is a hypothesis?</h3>

A hypothesis is a scientific conjecture, not verified, that requires corroboration. It is a possibility, but not a fact.

The researcher hypothesizes in order to predict what is going on or what is expected to occur. The hypothesis must express what is expected to occur in a perfectly comprehensive manner.

The hypothesis is a claim of how it works a relationship between two or more variables. The exposed relationship must be logical and clear.

The hypothesis must be objective. There are different kinds of hypotheses: descriptive, correlative, differentiative, or causative.

To get to formulate a hypothesis, first we need to identify all the involved variables in the experiment. In the exposed example,

Goal: test the effects that organic and chemical fertilizers had on plant growth.

Independent variable: Type of fertilizer (organic and chemical).

Depedent variable: plant growth.

Controlled variables: type of seed, soil, water

Prediction: the organic fertilizer would make the plants grow taller.

Hypothesis: Here I propose three ways to write the same hypothesis.

  • If organic fertilizer is added to the substrate, then plants will grow taller.
  • Using organic fertilizer will make plants grow taller.
  • In comparison to chemical fertilizer, an organic fertilizer will make plants grow taller.

In this way, you can establish a direct relationship between the independent variable and the dependent one.

Complete question:

John had a science fair project that he needed to do. He wanted to test the effects that organic and chemical fertilizers had on plant growth. John predicted that the organic fertilizer would make the plants grow taller. He used three pots, three of the same type of seed, soil, organic fertilizer, chemical fertilizer, water, and a ruler. John put soil in the pots. He added chemical fertilizer to the first pot, organic fertilizer in the second pot, and no fertilizer in the third pot. He then planted one seed in each pot. John had to water the pots daily. He also checked for growth and took measurements for a period of 10 days. He measured the height of the plants.

John made a data table to record his measurements.

After the 10th day, John observed that the plant with the chemical fertilizer grew the most.

Name two structural and two functional properties of proteins
Inga [223]
1.Proteins are linear polymers built of monomer units called amino acids. The construction of a vast array of macromolecules from a limited number of monomer building blocks is a recurring theme in biochemistry. Does protein function depend on the linear sequence of amino acids? The function of a protein is directly dependent on its threedimensional structure.<span>Remarkably, proteins spontaneously fold up into three-dimensional structures that are determined by the sequence of amino acids in the protein polymer. Thus, </span>proteins are the embodiment of the transition from the one-dimensional world of sequences to the three-dimensional world of molecules capable of diverse activities<span>.

</span>2.Proteins contain a wide range of functional groups<span>. These functional groups include alcohols, thiols, thioethers, carboxylic acids, carboxamides, and a variety of basic groups. When combined in various sequences, this array of functional groups accounts for the broad spectrum of protein function. Which of the following statements BEST defines vestigial structures? :
ZanzabumX [31]

Answer:

Structures that are still present but currently serve little to no purpose

Explanation:

<em>Vestigial structures/organs are general defined as structures/organs that are present but poorly developed without any functional use in the present living organisms but thought to have been fully developed and functional in their ancestors.</em>

Fully developed and functional organs gradually become less developed and non-functional across generations as the environment keeps changing and organisms found lesser use for the organs. An example includes the <u>caudal vertebrae</u> found in man which is kind of useless but thought to have been fully developed and functional in the ancestors of man - the monkeys.

<u>Vestigial organs are often used as one of the morphological evidence of the evolution of living organisms.</u>

"The presence of hair, composed of the protein keratin, is one of the most obvious characteristics of mammals. Although it is not very extensive or obvious on some species (such as whales), hair has many important functions for most mammals. Mammals are endothermic, and hair traps a boundary layer of air close to the body, retaining heat generated by metabolic activity. Along with insulation, hair can serve as a sensory mechanism via specialized hairs called vibrissae, better known as whiskers. Vibrissae attach to nerves that transmit information about tactile vibration produced by sound sensation, which is particularly useful to nocturnal or burrowing mammals. Hair can also provide protective coloration or be part of social signaling, such as when an animal’s hair stands “on end” to warn enemies, or possibly to make the mammal “look bigger” to predators.

Unlike the skin of birds, the integument (skin) of mammals, includes a number of different types of secretory glands. Sebaceous glands produce a lipid mixture called sebum that is secreted onto the hair and skin, providing water resistance and lubrication for hair. Sebaceous glands are located over most of the body. Eccrine glands produce sweat, or perspiration, which is mainly composed of water, but also contains metabolic waste products, and sometimes compounds with antibiotic activity. In most mammals, eccrine glands are limited to certain areas of the body, and some mammals do not possess them at all. However, in primates, especially humans, sweat glands are located over most of the body surface and figure prominently in regulating the body temperature through evaporative cooling. Apocrine glands, or scent glands, secrete substances that are used for chemical communication, such as in skunks. Mammary glands produce milk that is used to feed newborns. In both monotremes and eutherians, both males and females possess mammary glands, while in marsupials, mammary glands have been found only in some opossums. Mammary glands likely are modified sebaceous or eccrine glands, but their evolutionary origin is not entirely clear.

The skeletal system of mammals possesses many unique features. The lower jaw of mammals consists of only one bone, the dentary, and the jaw hinge connects the dentary to the squamosal (flat) part of the temporal bone in the skull. The jaws of other vertebrates are composed of several bones, including the quadrate bone at the back of the skull and the articular bone at the back of the jaw, with the jaw connected between the quadrate and articular bones. In the ear of other vertebrates, vibrations are transmitted to the inner ear by a single bone, the stapes. In mammals, the quadrate and articular bones have moved into the middle ear ((Figure)). The malleus is derived from the articular bone, whereas the incus originated from the quadrate bone. This arrangement of jaw and ear bones aids in distinguishing fossil mammals from fossils of other synapsids.

Mammals, like birds, possess a four-chambered heart; however, the hearts of birds and mammals are an example of convergent evolution, since mammals clearly arose independently from different groups of tetrapod ancestors. Mammals also have a specialized group of cardiac cells (fibers) located in the walls of their right atrium called the sinoatrial node, or pacemaker, which determines the rate at which the heart beats. Mammalian erythrocytes (red blood cells) do not have nuclei, whereas the erythrocytes of other vertebrates are nucleated. "
