Bernardino de Sahagn was a Franciscan friar, missionary priest, and pioneering ethnographer who helped Catholicize colonial New Spain. He arrived in New Spain in 1529 after being born in Sahagun, Spain.

Despite his primary focus on missionary work, his outstanding work recording indigenous worldviews and culture has given him the moniker of "the first anthropologist."
