Jacques Cartier established claims in north america for france and they established them at the shore of the Gaspé Peninsula.

The first European who described and mapped the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the shores of the Saint Lawrence River was Jacques Cartier. He named them the "country of Canadas" in North America.

They further tried to go ahead with colonization process that is of establishing colonies further inland but could not carry on with the process.
