The era of the "common man" officially began with Andrew Jackson's election as the seventh President. Jackson was regarded as the de facto champion of the working class, and his administration's policies reflected this. Because of the change in American politics' demographics, Jackson's election in 1828 is equally noteworthy. The states' removal of the barrier for owning property to vote led to a dramatic increase in the number of eligible voters, which led to a wider spread of suffrage.

After the war, the party all but vanished, and many of its former members joined Republican and Whig, where they helped build the political foundation for centralization, protectionism, and ultimately abolitionism in the second half of the 19th century.
