Transposable elements are examples of terminal deletion.

DNA sequences called transposable elements (TEs), commonly referred to as "jumping genes," are capable of moving from one region of the genome to another. Geneticist Barbara McClintock of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York made the initial discovery of these components more than 50 years ago. McClintock's finding was first met with skepticism by biologists. But during the next decades, it became clear that not only do TEs "jump," but they are also generally found in huge quantities in practically all species (including prokaryotes and eukaryotes). For instance, up to 90% of the maize genome and around 50% of the human genome, respectively, include TEs (Sanmiguel, 1996).
