President John Tyler prioritised Texas annexation, and in the final days of his presidency, Congress decided to create Texas a state—though Texas did not technically attain statehood until December 1845, under President James K. Polk. Congress eventually decided to annex Texas in 1844.

Texas became a slave state on December 29, 1845, widening the country's irreconcilable divides on the subject of slavery and sparking the Mexican-American War. His professed aim was to outmanoeuvre alleged British diplomatic efforts for slave emancipation in Texas, which would undermine slavery in the President United States. Tyler obtained an annexation contract in April 1844 after secret negotiations with the Houston government.
