Molecular mass / empirical mass = number with with the empirical formula needs to be multiplied to get molecular formula

Empirical mass = Atomic mass of S + atomic mass of O = 32.07 + 16 = 48.07

molar mass = 96.13 g

So ratio = 96.13 / 48.07 = 2

Hence the molecular formula = S2O2

Is it possible for two different compounds to be made from the exact same two elements? Why or why not? With a limited number of
mario62 [17]

Yes, it is possible to combine the same two elements to form two different compounds. An example is carbon dioxide CO2 and carbon monoxide CO. This is because two elements can form different types of bond and end up with different compounds.

There is a limited number of elements but a large number of compounds because of the above reason.

A compound composed of only sulfur and aluminum is analyzed. The mass ratio of aluminum to sulfur is found to be 1.00:1.78.
marta [7]

Answer:

a. Al2S3.

Explanation:

Molar mass of Al =  26.98

Molar mass of S = 32.06.

Ratio of AL:S is 1 : 1.78

Dividing by the moles we get:

0.0371  : 0.0555

= 1 : 1.5

So its Al2S3.
